When making healthy lifestyle changes you need three things: motivation, a supportive community, and resources. Motivation is the key ingredient to helping you achieve your goals, health or otherwise. Motivation can be found in a person’s grit. If you haven’t listened to the TED talk about grit with Angela Lee Duckworth, it’s highly recommended. Grit in psychology has been linked to the single reason people succeed. How can we tap into this? The answer isn’t apparent yet. However, through passion and perseverance change is possible. Just like in Functional Medicine, grit is personalized. And to tap into it we need to look into our own passions and what drives ourselves.
Secondly, a supportive community can be found in several avenues. It can be through a support group, friends, family, doctor’s office, a gym, etc. Essentially anywhere you find yourself supported. The importance of a quality community makes a vast difference on how likely someone is to achieve their health goals. There have been several studies linking food choices to social identity and the impact peer pressure can have on the food choices we all make. A research done in Liverpool concluded from 15 different studies that “People who were told that other people were making low-calorie or high-calorie food choices were much more likely to make the same choices themselves. The review also revealed that social norms affect how much food people eat. People who are told that others are eating large quantities of food are more likely to eat more.” Be mindful of who you are surrounding yourself with as they may be influencing unhealthy eating habits, and be sure you have a supportive community to remind you why you’ve made these changes to your lifestyle habits. A great way to keep yourself in check in peer pressure situations, especially centering around food, is to ask yourself, “do I really want to deal with the painful symptoms after eating this?” Most of us would say, ‘no’. And no matter how delicious those donuts look that your coworker brought in are you must practice restraint.
Lastly, resources are an excellent way to supplement and guide your lifestyle changes. Knowing where to look and what to look for can be challenging. Luckily, we’ve done some of the work for you. If you haven’t already, check out our affiliations page. It’s filled with companies that we stand by for their quality of products and dedication to healthy living. We know it can be overwhelming and exhausting to do your own homework on these companies. So, we’ll do it for you! We’ll feature our affiliations in blog posts and give a breakdown of what the company is, why it’s great, and some of our favorite products. Finding your next favorite healthy living company just got a whole lot easier.
What is it?
Our first featured affiliation is Thrive Market. If you’re not familiar with it, Thrive Market is a cross between Costco and Whole Foods. Similar to Costco in that they are a wholesale direct membership based company, where you pay an annual fee and get access to all their goodies. And similar to Whole Foods because they carry the best healthy foods to suit every lifestyle. Covering everything from Paleo, Gluten-free, Vegan, Sugar-free, Cruelty-free, and much more.
How does it work?
Not only do you get access to the best healthy options, but you get them at a greatly discounted price. Most items are 30-50% off retail! With all those savings Thrive passes to members, you will save $50-80 per order over retail.
Because of their valued relationships with their partners, and because they purchase in bulk and avoid the distribution channels of a typical grocery store, they can extend these discounted prices to their members. And it doesn’t end at just food. Healthy home products, beauty, bath and body, and even pet care are also covered.
New members get free shipping on their first order (click the banner above!). Thereafter, you will receive free shipping on every order over $49.
You could spend all day searching through Thrive Market’s loot and discounted prices. After shopping and trying them out ourselves, here are some of our favorites from Thrive.
Thrive Market has it all, down to even groceries for your pets. Don’t forget, for a limited time you can get 25% off your first order, free shipping, and a 30-day free trial membership. Sign up now so you don’t miss out!

(Kristine Burke, M.D.) I love this practice model! I've never felt better. Find the problem and fix it instead of treat the problem with drugs - brilliant!
(Kristine Burke, M.D.) I greatly appreciate the availability of the Dr.'s time and short waits for appointments. I think being rushed in and out serves little purpose. From the day I started going to Dr. Burke I expressed my expectations of my doctor, which are what we get now. I'm sure there is a lot I don't understand in terms of insurance coverage and laws in this state,...

(Kristine Burke, M.D.) I like that I am not just treated for a specific symptom, but that my overall health is evaluated. I like that I can call and usually get an appointment for myself or my children within 24 hours, and sometimes the same day if crucial. The fact that my daughter gets free healthcare through her employer (Sutter Health) and sees Sutter providers but she ...
